Life is really fucking hard. Innocent people get hurt, the world is filled with injustices, and cruel people seem to invade every corner. People resort to building up walls in order to not get hurt and they take their own lives, not wanting to be alive. The world seems like it’s not filled with any good sometimes.
We judge each other by race, religion, sexuality, weight…pretty much anything you can think of you can be judged for. The same situation can be turned into a “nice” or “gross.” For example:
“Oh, you smoke? Don’t you know how dangerous that is? Are you trying to look cool?”
“Oh, you don’t smoke? C’mon, stop being so lame. We’re all gonna die anyway.”
I mean, holy shit! It doesn’t seem like you ever win in this life!
Let me tell you something, though: Life is hard, but it’s fucking beautiful. I get it, shit happens and it sucks but you also get the opportunity to be happy and there are a plethora of opportunities. We’re so caught up in all the sadness of world we forget we can smile too.
So, why should you focus on the good parts of life?
1. YOU HAVE A CHANCE TO LIVE THE LIFE YOU WANT TO LIVE
You are allowed to feel alive. You can go to college or not, you can go around the store with your best friend while singing loudly, you can go cliff diving, or you can learn to love yourself. You are in control of your life. No one is “the boss” of you and no one can tell you what to do. You have a chance, dude. There are opportunities all around you just waiting to be grasped.
Pursue the thing that you’re passionate about. If no one has made a career out of it, then be the first one. It’s going to be terrifying but I know that you can do it. Believe in yourself so much that nothing can stop you, I know that I do.
“If you’re not dreaming big for yourself, who’s doing it for you?” – Gary Vaynerchuk
2. YOU CAN MAKE OTHER PEOPLE SMILE
Focusing on yourself is important, but you can make others happy too. It’s even beneficial for you because if you can help others, you can be happy.
You can volunteer, read Harry Potter to your younger siblings, watch Sinister with your cousins even though you’re terrified, or take your parents out to lunch. Share your favorite song with the person you like or start an organization that helps the homeless.
The act can be small or vast, it doesn’t matter. Giving, despite the size, quantity, or quality makes others feel important because they know you’re giving from a special place. That’ll make you feel important too and will help appreciate that you’re alive because you made something amazing happen.
3. THERE ARE GOOD MOVIES AND SHOWS TO WATCH
I’m a huge fan of movies and shows. There are some really good ones out there that you don’t want to miss out on. Being able to watch shows is a huge reason I’m thankful I’m alive, haha. There’s shows about love like LOVE, there’s chemistry in Breaking Bad, clones in Orphan Black, and non-stop laughter in F.R.I.E.N.D.S.
There’s movies that fuck you up like Shutter Island, there’s cool music in Sing Street, shitty movies like Sharknado, and inappropriately funny movies like Almost Adults. You don’t want to miss out on any of them, do you?
4. YOU CAN LOOK AROUND FOR THE GOOD STUFF
Doing nice things is great, but reading or watching some random acts of kindness can be just as heart-warming.
Look around you and try to find awesome things that are going on. Maybe you’re in a restaurant and there’s a family of 6 being extra loud laughing their asses off. Look at your newborn niece and all of her innocence. Think of all the puppies being adopted somewhere.
Life can be terribly difficult, but there are an abundant amount of things you can do to make yourself happy. Don’t let the negativity in the world bring you down. Focus on the good.

5. YOU HAVE A PURPOSE TO LIVE OUT
Whether you have one purpose or 50 of them, you should be glad that you’re alive because you are here to make a difference. Your purpose can be direct or not. One of your purposes can be to stand up for someone because they’re being bullied your junior year of high school.
The person you stand up for is someone who wants to take their life, but when you stand up for them they realize that someone cares. Then, that person goes to share their story and touches hundreds of lives. One of those lives is the mother of 3 who is so tired of life but the story lets her remember that her kids care and it all just keeps going and going and it all starts because of you.
Or maybe you need to become a business person who then makes free YouTube videos to help others build business. Maybe someone has listened to your conversation of you coming out to your parents at a restaurant and it inspires them to do the same. You get the point. You fucking matter.
Be glad that you’re alive because there is so much to look forward to.
