“When you have nothing, give.” —Tony Robbins

*Plays Love is Everything by Ariana Grande right here*

Giving back is important, we all know this. You get the opportunity to put a smile on someone’s face, give them hope, make them happy, and so much more. It’s a selfless act that makes people believe in the world a little more.

But, there are a few benefits to giving. Courtesy of Babble, I found out that people who volunteer have a 20% chance higher of living!

Giving back also boosts your happiness.

If you’re in a rut or you’re having one of those nights where you think that you don’t matter (not true, by the way), give.

Go out and volunteer even if you don’t want to—force yourself.

Being in contact with others + giving back = pure joy.

Maybe you’re using this for your benefit, too, but at least you’re doing something good for others while you’re at it.

As the Tony Robbins quote says, give when you’ve got nothing left.

If you have little energy, volunteer and the Universe will reward you with joy.

If you’ve only got $10 in your bank account, give it to the kid singing at the corner of the park or the homeless man who sleeps in a tent a block away.

Because when you give, you get back.

Knowing this, don’t just give and give because you know that you’ll get more in return. That’s not selfless, and it’s fake.

Selflessly give. And as a perk, the Universe may reward you.

So, now that I’ve said all that, Here are 5 ways that you can give back!

Donating takes only a few minutes out of your day and you make somebody’s life better. It’s a simple way to give back.

There are 1.5 million nonprofit organizations in the U.S. alone. If you don’t know where to donate—research! Choose something that hits home for you that you’ll want to help out.

Here a few if you’re too lazy to do that: (Remember even $5 makes a difference)

  • The Trevor Project – an LGBTQIA suicide hotline
  • Together We Rise – “No more trash bags for foster kids.” When foster kids have to move, they’re given a trash bag to put their belongings in. By donating you help make a “Sweet Case”—a duffel bag with goodies.
  • Hearing Health Foundation — cure hearing loss and tinnitus
  • Love146 — ending child trafficking and exploitation

You can also donate old clothes and shoes to Salvation Army or Goodwill!

You don’t always need to have money to give back! You can volunteer, too. A perfect place to find out where you can volunteer in places near by is VolunteerMatch. You get different suggestions with lots of information, and it’s really easy to sign up.

Unfortunately, there are homeless people everywhere. Sometimes they’re outside of restaurants or near your home, so buy/give them a meal!

Donating blood can save up to 3 lives according to the Red Cross. You may not know who you help, but you make a difference, and that’s all that matters.

People need you. It may not seem like it, but there are people who need you—kids, other teens and young adults, even adults.

So, become a mentor.

If you’re bilingual, teach English at your local library. If you know a lot about a topic that you know people are interested in, make YouTube videos.

If you’re 18+ and have a license, become a Big Sister or Big Brother and help a kid have a good childhood!

Whatever you choose to do, do it because you want to help.

Let me know in the comments below how you’re going to give throughout this giving season!
