Here’s a sad fact: People are going to discourage you.

Here’s a sadder fact: Sometimes, it will be the people you love most.

Friends, family members, acquaintances, and even strangers online will say terrible things to you. They’ll make fun of the way you look in front of a camera if you upload videos on YouTube. They will persistently tell you that the career you chose will only get you nowhere. Others will tell you that you’ll fail and end up poor.

Unfortunately, there’s we can’t jack shit about these disgustingly rude people. They’ll be there, left and right, trying to get you to quit.

Does that all scare you? Is this making you want to quit, or even stopping you from getting started? I’m telling you this because this is the reality. People are assholes, and we’ve got no choice, but to live among them.

But if I’m scaring you…

Here’s a happy fact: People are going to encourage you

Here’s a happier fact: Sometimes, it will be the people you love most.

Even though you’ll have haters and internet trolls in one corner, you’ll have people who support you in the other 3.

These people want you to succeed more than anything. When you feel like giving up, they’ll run to you and hold you up and tell you to keep going. They’ll encourage you when you want to try something new.

Your family members will keep you in check, asking you every now and then how you’re really doing. Your friends will tell you that you can do it and that they can’t wait until you’re rich so you can take them somewhere fancy.

These are the type of people that all of your focus should be on because there will always be more of them. Just think about it this way, when you watch a YouTube video do you ever look at the likes and dislikes?

Let’s assume that someone has 1,000 dislikes. That’s a lot, isn’t it? That’s 1,000 people that didn’t like either the person or the content of the video that person worked really hard on. BUT, look at the likes. Chances are they will have 45,000 LIKES. That’s 45,000 who loved the video.

If that were your video, which would you focus on? Yes, 1,000 dislikes is a lot, but isn’t 45,000 likes even greater? Your mind by default will do everything in its power to focus on the negative, but you need to look over at the people who actually loved you and pay attention to them.

Why should I? You may ask. Because, those people like you, they like your stuff, and they probably want more. How unfair would it be if you stopped because 1,000 people disliked your stuff? It’s selfish. The 45,000 are counting on you to make them happy and because you had a few dislikes compared to the likes, you’re going to stop?

It’s your job to focus on the people that encourage you. They’re taking time from their own day to tell you that you can do it and you’re not even paying attention to them? That’s a little rude, don’t you think?

Now, let’s back to the discouragers.

Do you want to know why they’re discouraging you in the first place?

They’re discouraging you because they’re jealous. I know, I know, you’ve probably heard that a million times and you were expecting something different, but what can you do? It’s the truth!

But another reason they bully you is that you’re different. And being different is bad, right? *she says very sarcastically.*

Let’s dig into these further…

The people who are discouraging you are jealous because they don’t have the guts to be doing what you’re doing. You are so brave because you’re actually going after the thing you love to do. You’re defying all of society’s rules and going against all odds just to live your life doing the things you’re passionate about.

They’re jealous because you’ve got a chance at living out a genuinely happy life. Everyone else is happy, but even still they’re going to grow old thinking “Why didn’t I?” They’re way too scared to even try and so they hate on you for doing so. They discourage you because to them, you don’t deserve to be happy because they’re not happy, so why should you be?

They’re jealous because you’re everything they’re not.

People will also discourage you cause you’re different. If you’ve noticed (and I know you have), society does not do well with different. When you decide to go to art school or not go to college at all, again, you’re going against everything society knows, the routine everyone’s familiar with.

When you decide to take a different path, it makes them uncomfortable because it’s different and as history shows, they attack. They do everything in their power to keep you in the comfort zone, where you grow up, get married, have a family, all while working a 9 to 5 job.

Yes, it is much safer, but where’s the fun in that?

They don’t actually want you to fail, they’re just too afraid for you, and the only way they know how to express that is through hate. Keep that in mind.

First, I want to clarify that this doesn’t mean that you should surround yourself with negative people who will bring you down. What I mean is, if these types of people are around you, might as well use them to your advantage.

There is one thing that all humans have in common: We’re all so goddamn prideful.

None of us like being wrong, or getting embarrassed, or getting our pride hurt. That’s why fights sometimes happen. You know what I’m talking about. You and your friend are fighting because you both think you’re right about something, but then halfway you realize shit, she is right. But you’re not going to admit that are you? You’re going to fight on until you have proven that your friend is wrong.

That’s one advantage of having people who discourage you in your life. You will do everything in your power to prove that person wrong. You will work hard and not quit because we can’t afford to take a blow to our pride. These people suck, but they will motivate the shit out of you.

Because you want to win (and you will).

  • People who discourage you are jealous of your courage
  • they also fear you and are most likely intimidated
  • you have a lot of support, shift your focus and energy onto them
  • use these types of people as a motivation to keep going
  • you will succeed if you work hard and keep at it, don’t quit for a bunch of online trolls
