Hey guys! My name’s Itxy, and today I wanted to talk to you about what nobody else talks about, and that is the importance of not being productive.
I’ve learned one thing recently, and that is that your productivity does not define you.
Between the real world and what you see on social media there are 2 things that you’re always seeing. Those phrases are “work hard” and “hustle.”
We see it in YouTube videos, we see it on Instagram posts, and it’s what our parents tell us. And they tell us this because it’s a very important thing to hear! You should be working hard. You should be working really freaking hard to actually reach your goals.
There is no escaping that. If you want to achieve something, you have to put in the work, and repeat the same steps over and over again.
The hustle and work hard messages are out there because we’re lazy. We’ll binge-watch Netflix for 5 hours, and then complain about how we haven’t reached our goals yet, and that just makes no freaking sense.
How do you expect to reach your goals if you’re not putting in the work?
So, work hard and hustle are important messages, but there is another side to it, and that is that self-care is an actual thing.
Self-care has a lot of meanings, but one of the things it means is that we take a break every now and then to just enjoy life, and do the things that we love.
It means that we take a break from work. Even if you love your job and you wouldn’t change anything about it and you can work 16-hour days, it’s still important to take a break every now and then. You still need to have a life outside of work!
I think that’s the problem with seeing hustle all over social media, and hearing it all over the place. Whenever we do take an hour to take a break, and we allow ourselves to escape work, it makes us feel guilty. We’re not actually allowing ourselves to enjoy that break because all we’re thinking about is how we have to get back to work.
But like I said, your productivity is not all you should be focusing on.
There is more to life than your productivity.
The truth is that you probably are working hard. You’re putting in the hours, and you’re doing what you need to do in order to reach your goals.
Your productivity may be above average, so why is it that you know you’re putting in the work that needs to be put in, but you’re still feeling guilty when you take the break you know you deserve?
Why is it that when you take those breaks, you’re still thinking, I have to get back to work. I still have shit to do?
Stop doing that! It’s perfectly okay to just read a random fiction book that’s not going to teach you shit. It’s okay to go to the movies instead of watching another Gary Vee video. It’s okay to do all of these random things if you’re working hard.
You’re already being productive. You’re already doing what needs to be done. So allow yourself a break every now and then, you’re allowed to do that!
Yes, work is very important but so is living life and just having fun. Moving forward in life and always striving to reach another goal isn’t the only thing that matters.
There’s always going to be something new to reach! Though you can have your dreams and your goals, it’s important to have something to aim toward, it’s okay to take a pause, and just be.
You don’t have to focus on your productivity 24/7 when there’s so much more to life than that!
If you’ve been working hard all day, take a one hour break, and don’t feel guilty about it. Do whatever the hell you enjoy just for yourself.
And if none of that convinces you to actually take a break, just think of happiness as another type of productivity.
It’s another thing to work toward. If you like the word work, then work toward your happiness. It’s just another type of productivity, and it matters just as life as your work life does.
